Excerpt One – Legal  Ease by Lori Ryan

“Jack, darling…” Jack’s Aunt Mabry breezed into the room. “I’ve decided to redo my kitchen and the downstairs floor of my townhouse. Chad has a friend staying with him right now so I need to stay at your place for a few weeks until my kitchen is completed.”

Jack had to work to keep from rolling his eyes. He knew perfectly well what Aunt Mabry was doing. She wanted to spy on him and Kelly. There was no way she’d be redoing her kitchen if she didn’t want an excuse to stay with him. And she would normally stay at the Omni downtown or at a spa by the water instead of with him. She had never stayed at his house before, not for a day in his life, even when his mother was alive.

She was spying. He was sure of it. His mind filtered through the excuses he could give her but when he quickly weighed all of the factors, he decided it was best to just let her move in for a bit to get her off their backs. Besides, if his aunt were around he and Kelly would have to pretend to be husband and wife a lot more often, and he liked pretending that where Kelly was concerned.

With unexpected enthusiasm, Jack smiled and said, “Sure thing, Aunt Mabry. You’re welcome anytime. When do you need to move in?”

“Right now,” she said with a Cheshire Cat grin. “I’ll just head over there right now.”

With that announcement, she walked out of the office as breezily as she had waltzed in. Jack stared after her for a minute when suddenly it dawned on him. Kelly and he didn’t share a room. Oh, hell. His aunt wouldn’t buy the happily-ever-after marriage if she found out he and Kelly didn’t share a room. He grabbed the phone to try to catch Kelly or Mrs. Poole in time to warn them.

***

Kelly whipped through the house and up the stairs, calling out for Mrs. Poole as she ran. “Mrs. Poole, come quickly! We have to move. We have to move.” Kelly continued yelling as she ran into her room and grabbed drawers full of clothes and piled hangers with slacks and dresses on them.

Mrs. Poole came up the stairs with a puzzled look on her face. “What on earth are you hollering about, Kelly?” she said as she tried to enter the room. She had to jump out of the way as Kelly made a mad dash to Jack’s room.

“We have to move all of my stuff into Jack’s room,” Kelly said, out of breath from her packing and running. “Jack’s Aunt Mabry is on her way here and she’s staying with us for a couple of weeks,” Kelly blurted out as she ran back down the hall to gather more of her belongings.

“Oh Lord,” Mrs. Poole rolled her eyes and followed after Kelly. She quickly grabbed clothes and toiletries and rushed down the hall to Jack’s room. She and Kelly repeated the trip half a dozen more times as they transferred everything and set it into place. Mrs. Poole cleared out half of Jack’s dresser and closet and made room for Kelly’s things while Kelly folded and put her clothing away to make it appear as though the two had been living in holy matrimony since day one.

Kelly put away the last of her things and took a deep breath. She turned to survey the masculine-looking room. There was a dark mahogany dresser and matching armoire against the deep green walls. Large windows looked out on the same beautiful waterfront view that her guest room windows had shared. She stopped suddenly and held her breath when her eyes landed on the king-sized bed in the center. Until that moment, it hadn’t occurred to her that she and Jack would now have to share a bed. Kelly’s smile fell away as she realized that keeping her attraction hidden from Jack just became a lot more difficult.

Spotlight on “Come Away With Me” (The Andrades) by NY Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Ruth Cardello

Image
Synopsis:
Gio Andrade:
Rich, powerful, sexy. A man who thinks he has everything . . . until he meets Julia.

Julia Bennett:
Sweet, spontaneous, and desperate to sell her jewelry line in New York City. She takes a job as a night security guard to pay the rent.

Sparks fly when she mistakes her boss for an intruder.

He can’t get her out of his head.  She can’t find the strength to deny him.

Will lies bring them together or tear them apart forever?

Exclusive excerpt for the tour

“Good morning, Julia,” Gio said, his voice warm and intimate.

She sat straight up in her bed and dropped the card. “Mr. Andrade.”

“We’re way beyond using last names and you know that.”

Protectively pulling down her nightgown to cover her knees, Julia said huskily, “About that. Thank you for the flowers, but—”

“Did I wake you?”

“No, the delivery did that,” she said, then felt bad that she sounded ungrateful. This wasn’t going as she’d planned.

“So, you’re not on your bed? I have an image in my head of you there, surrounded by those roses.”

The heat from a blush spread up Julia’s chest and warmed her cheeks. She knew she shouldn’t, but she couldn’t help herself. She said, “I am on my bed.” Then she hastily added, “But only because it doubles as my couch.”

He groaned. “I refuse to sink low enough to ask you what you’re wearing, but if you want to describe it I won’t stop you.”

There was something irresistibly tempting about doing just that. Was it the knowledge that in that moment she had the same power over him that he had over her? The sense that he was fighting this as much as she was?

It proved too heady to resist. “I’m still in my nightgown.”

He let out a long breath. “If I were there it wouldn’t be on you for long. Take it off, Julia. For me.”

Her first response was to laugh and refuse, but his softly spoken order echoed through her and her body started humming with need for him. As she gave into it, it became impossible to deny him anything. She slid the nightgown over her head and lay back, fully naked on her bed. “It’s off,” she whispered.

The pained sound he made had her dripping wet and closing her eyes, imagining him there with her.

“Lick your thumb. Lick it, then circle one of your nipples. Imagine my tongue there. I wouldn’t be able to keep my mouth off you. What would you want me to do to them?”

What would have felt ridiculous with anyone else was somehow right with Gio. She did as he asked, gasped as the cold air tightened and puckered her nipple with pleasure. She imagined that her hand was his mouth. Her fingers were his teeth. She pinched herself lightly and moaned. “I’d want you to use your teeth gently. Like you did in your office. Tugging. Teasing. Oh, God, this is crazy.”

“You’re killing me, but don’t stop, Julia. I’m here with you. Right here. What would you want me to do? What do you like?”

She ran her hand up her neck and pushed her hair aside. “I love the feel of your hot breath on my neck, the feel of your lips claiming where I’m vulnerable.”

“I’ll remember that. I’ll start there and kiss my way down, slowly. I’ll kiss the curve of your waist, the silk of your thighs. I’ll want to dive into you, but I’ll make you wait until you’re writhing and begging for me to taste you.”

That would not take long, Julia almost said aloud.

“Are you wet for me, Julia?”

“Yes,” she said, giving herself to him fully in the safety of the situation. Her hand sought her own juices and she began to rub herself. “Oh, God, I am so wet.”

“Do you have a vibrator?” he asked and her hand froze.

I can’t tell him.

She did have one, but it was her guilty secret. One that she hadn’t even shared with her ex-boyfriend, even after sleeping with him.

“You do, don’t you? Are you shy about it? Sex is a natural part of life, Julia. There is nothing shameful about knowing how to please yourself. In fact, I want you more now. I want to watch you make yourself come. I want to lie next to you, caressing you as you bring yourself to climax. But for now, let me hear it. Take yourself to where we both want to go.”

When I Come Home by Merri Scott

Image

We admire people such as parents, teachers, friends and movie stars who influence our lives for their special characteristics. For me, my grandmother was the person I admired most. In every aspect of my life she played an important role not only as my grandmother but also as a good friend and teacher.  I will always remember her personality, strength and faith.

What is the best way to describe her personality?  My grandmother never met a stranger.  In her company you were always met with a hug and a smile.  She loved her family and the Lord.  She always put others needs ahead of her own.  I remember when I began writing I was so nervous about telling anyone. I let my grandmother read some of my work and she was so proud of me.  She encouraged me to keep writing and even bought me my first journal.  My grandmother was the glue that held our family together.

My grandmother was so strong.  She raised 5 children and kept all of us grandchildren in line.  When she was 6 months pregnant with my mom, and her twin sister, she received 2nd and 3rd degree burns in a fire.  For months my grandmother had to sleep in a tent because she could not bare anything touching her skin. Since the local hospital was closed down she recovered at home and 3 months later gave birth to healthy twin girls.  A few years later my grandfather had a terrible accident where he was electrocuted.  He was in the hospital for over 6 months recovering.  My grandmother was left at home to take care of the children and the farm on her own.  Not once did she complain.  She always said “the Lord does not give you more than you can handle”.

My grandmother was tested but never lost her faith in the people or the Lord.  There was a young boy working for my grandparents on their farm.  He was 15 years old at the time and he lost his mother.  He had no other family so my grandmother stepped in and adopted him.  Growing up I did not have the best home life so my grandmother always opened her arms and home to me.  She taught me about trusting in the Lord and forgiveness.  My grandmother was diagnosed with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) when I was 15 years old.  This disease has no cure and was responsible for the loss of her sister’s a year before.  Our entire family was devastated with the news.  Not my grandmother.  She had faith in the Lord that this was his will so she did not question it.

My grandmother passed away six years later.  I remember walking in her house a few months before she died and saw her leaning on the counter.  She could barely catch her breath and I asked what in the world she was doing.  She said making the preacher some cookies.  What I didn’t know until later was she was also making me her famous homemade macaroni and cheese for my birthday.  That was her, always putting other people first.  At her funeral the church was so full people were standing outside.  To this day people still talk about her.  My grandmother proved how strong she was, her personality pulled people in and her faith kept her going.  I can only hope that in some small way I am like her.

Below is a song I wrote with the help of my nephews in honor of my grandmother.  I started this song the day she passed away but could never finish it.  Years later while writing and my nephew Jacob on the guitar the song was completed.  Below are the lyrics and the link to YouTube where we filmed the completed version.  (mind you is it a rough cut, it was done right after we finished the song)

When I Come Home

Verse 1

It was a cold January morning

When the Angels took her home

The birds stopped their singing

Like they knew she was gone

I tried to convince myself that

She was in a better place

But my mind was so cloudy

And I couldn’t face the pain

Chorus

But the doctor’s said she fought a good fight

With her family by her side

And the preacher said she lived a good life

Walked with Jesus and did what was right

Now I close my eyes and imagine you here with me

But the whiskey’s not strong enough

To make it a reality

But its ok I wanna let you know

That I will see you again

When I come home

I’ll see you again

When I come home

Verse 2

Now I’m all alone

Toasting to this old stone

Swallowing my tears

Only memories for

The rest of my years

Repeat chorus

When sexy, but tough as nails, Archer Ryan keeps getting in her way, Audrey has to decide whether he’ll be an asset or a distraction her body and mind can’t afford.

Merri’s Review:  I am a huge fan of the MacKenzie’s so I could not wait for this one and boy did this book live up to its name Sizzle!! Audrey is a beautiful, scarred, kick-ass woman who has been betrayed by the person she trusted most and is out for revenge.  Archer is a hot, sexy, alpha male who wants nothing more than to gain Audrey’s trust and take her pain away.  This book has it all hot romance, suspense and drama.  I don’t want to give away any spoilers so I will just say we also catch up with Shane and how he is coping with everything.  I absolutely can’t wait for his book!!  Well done Mrs. Hart.

Why?

As I walk through these empty spaces the ghosts reach out to grab me and pull me back in.  They keep trying to drag me back to that dark place where there was no escape.  I try to remind myself I am not that lost child anymore, the one who could not fight the monsters.  I am not a child taught to hide the truth and pretend it didn’t exist.   They can’t hurt me anymore.  Where were you?  My protector, the one who was supposed to love me unconditionally instead of deeming me unwanted and unlovable.

My screams gone unnoticed, my pleas for mercy left unheard.  I am no longer the outcast made to feel it was my fault.  The one people looked at as the bad seed, the one who was nothing but a trouble maker.  If you would have only looked past the façade I put on to see what was happening deep below the surface.  Instead I was alone, made to feel worthless and uncared for.  Made to doubt what most people take for granted, unconditional love.

As I got older I drowned my worries in a bottle that was never empty.  A deep, dark well that I circled looking into the abyss hoping never to be seen again.  Just when my fingers were slipping a small hand reached out grabbed my hand and begged me not to let go.  Looking down at the darkness, at my own mortality it would have been easier to fall.  I chose to hold on, to fight to not let them win.

As I close the door on the ghosts and lock them away I find myself only having one question, why?

Taking my Best Friend to Meet Jasinda and Jack Wilder

ImageYesterday I had the pleasure of attending the Passionistas author signing event in Nashville, TN.  The authors signing were Jasinda & Jack Wilder, Abbi Glines, Chelsea M. Cameron and Tiffany Reisz.  My primary reason for going was to see Jasinda again.  I met her in July of last year and developed an immediate and total fan girl crush on her.  She is totally sweet and full of awesomeness.  I invited my best friend Wanda to go with me since she is new to the literary world and had just finished reading “Falling Into You”.   When my bff and I are together I can assure you lots of perverted silliness ensues.  Mostly on my part however, I am slowly bringing her over to the dark side.

We arrived at the signing about 15 minutes before start time and the place was full. We were given a number so we could be called up in groups of ten.  Since I had recently had foot surgery Wanda and I found a seat in the magazine area to wait.  As I was looking around I noticed a book in the philosophy section called “Ass-holes” so immediately it drew my attention.   I then proceeded to entertain us by taking pictures of me with this book, getting looks from the weird guy and Wanda getting an old man’s butt in her face.  We also had our eye on this guy with the very, very nice butt.  After staring at him for a while and before I could make him my next houseboy our numbers were called.

We made it up to see Jasinda and Jack finally and they so remembered me.  That made my day and impressed my bff.  I had Mr. Wilder sign my book by him “The Missionary” and of course I had Jasinda sign my “Big Girls Do It Bigger” book.  Did I mention this book is almost 800 pages of total greatness and you should get it?  We talked about upcoming signings, their trip to Nashville, my comedic skills and the fact that Mr. Wilder is bad with names (I am too).  They were also so nice to Wanda and she was totally impressed.  This was her first book signing and she is already asking to meet Jasinda again.  If you have the opportunity to meet them you should do it you will not be disappointed.  Thank you for being your amazing fun loving self and I can’t wait until I see you guys again.

Spolight on Author Vicki Green’s new release “Soul-Mates Forever”

Image‘Love …captures us in a moment and changes us forever’

When love isn’t enough to break through the walls that were built so long ago, how is true happiness ever found? Paxton Davenport built these walls when every guy she met only wanted her gorgeous body. Her modeling career really takes off after returning to L.A. from her best friend’s wedding. But her thoughts continually plague her of the hot rocker, Tucker Williams, who pursued her both times she visited her friend. Her rich parents have never provided the attention or love she needed growing up. She is considered your typical 21 year old rich bitch, snooty to most but deep inside she is the most loving and caring person you could ever know.

Tucker, or Tuck as everyone knows him, grew up in a house where a normal day was seeing his parents drugged out, no food to be found and finding solace in his guitar. His mom ending up in prison and his dad dying from an overdose leads him to falling in with the wrong crowd. With the help of friends, at the age of 22, he finds himself as a tattoo artist by day, the leader of a Rock band (Razers Edge) by night. He falls head over heels for Paxton one night when the band is playing at Barton’s bar but she won’t give him the time of day.

Will Tuck ever get through Paxton’s walls or annoy the hell out of her trying?

*Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

A little about Vicki:

I have worked at the same full time job for 35 years.

I have a wonderful husband and two teenage boys.

I have been reading Romance books for over 2 years, yes I was a late bloomer. I have had this story in my head for that long and decided one day to just put it on paper, see how it reads. I just kept going until soon it was a full story.
